Maybe if I use the word "change" all the time and if I get enough suckers to follow me because they want "change" for the sake of change, even though it, but itself, is a meaningless concept, I can be elected the next president of America.

It only works if you are also a member of a group commonly perceived by the left to be inherent underdogs, i.e. minorities, women, homosexuals, etc. They have to feel good about themselves, as if they're uplifting an entire supposedly oppressed underclass by voting for one member of that group, even though that individual's socio-economic status is high.
