"Big Box"? Not Hardly

For those of you who haven't seen it yet, here's what your new Wal-Mart Supercenter will look like Pullman (click on the image for a bigger picture):

Critics have often said how Wal-Mart is a "monstrosity" that will "uglify" Pullman. In what way? The new Supercenter will have the best architecture of any store in town except for maybe the new Safeway. If you want an ugly box store, think ShopKo, the darling of the PARDners.

The Daily News wrote about Moscow's building ordinace today. It is said that they want to make it any building more than 40,000 sqft would have all the extra regulations. They have talked about moving it up to 50-60,000 sqft so Tri-State and M-P Building Supply would not get caught up in the regulations. So they pretty much admit two things...

That they are out to get WalMart and that it will be such a hassle that they want to protect a select couple businesses from going through the hardships it would cause.

They are pretty much hand picking the businesses that can go in.

You would think the government was there to supply for the common needs of the city, not to pick and choose who can be there.

They are on very shaky legal ground by doing so, and for the reasons you state.

Oh well. All the better for us in Pullman! The tables have been turned.

I think it is time the PARDners become the MARDners.

It's a gorgeous building. It reminds me a little of the Costco in Clarkston. From what I have been told, the store will be similar to Shopko in that it won't be visible from the street. Hurry, hurry, hurry, I can't wait!
