I remember when Rona Barrett appeared on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson years ago, and she told Johnny, "You'd be surprised at how much news is generated from press releases." I thought that was a stunning statement then, but I started noticing stories in the news and eventually, after reading carefully between the lines, found that many indeed, were as a result of some press release or press conference. And still today, when it's a slow news day, pay attention to what story leads the national network news (and sometimes makes it onto the front page the next day in your daily newspaper); odds are it will be some study that shows widgets cause cancer or obesity or something similar that makes it appear that whatever the 'news' was, it magically was discovered that day, as opposed to being essentially force-fed to the media via a PR machine.Scott Fouruhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03743444643361564014noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13796804.post-1142571850517776602006-03-16T21:04:00.000-08:002006-03-16T21:04:00.000-08:00This really is B. The NYT, WaPO, ChiTrib and other major papers regularily publish near-verbatim press releases from the Violence Policy Center attacking gun ownership. All the editorials say the same thing and they all come out at about the same time. They are just "reprint services." Then the little papers pick up the editorials and directly reprint them.

Since it's for a just cause (gun hatred) no one in the MSM gives a moments thought to how slickly they are being used. But, 3 or 4 times each year, you can observe this pattern if you keep your eyes open.30yearProfhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08490572564579959432noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13796804.post-1142554689047726642006-03-16T16:18:00.000-08:002006-03-16T16:18:00.000-08:00Yeah I read a story recently in the Philadelphia I...Yeah I read a story recently in the Philadelphia Inquirer about a counter-protest to a meeting Rick Santorum was having at a Phily church.

I noticed in the story that the reported made reference to a conference call with the protesting ministers (who of course were protesting spontaneously per the story). I emailed the reported and asked who organized the conference call and she replied "Fenton Communications" which is a big, powerful, liberal,PR firm in DC. The reported admitted she should have mention Fenton in the story and I said to her without Fenton's involvement she never would have written the story!! And I was correct.

So, the NYT has no case here until they start to footnote and explain "why a story is a story".I'm Full of Souphttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00241724007440718575noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13796804.post-1142554039647031372006-03-16T16:07:00.000-08:002006-03-16T16:07:00.000-08:00This is BS. Newspaper reporters do this all the time.

For instance, Hiawatha Bray wrote this incredible puff piece about the PC game the movies - about how wonderful it was, how the fans loved it, how it was a huge seller. Only none of it was true. The game flopped and the fans hated it.Jeremyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06440605975564288373noreply@blogger.com
